Visit Bongo

Visit Bongo

After the communal impulse underpinning High School and Made For Us, Tanzania’s Harmonize refines his approach to celebrating the continent’s rhythms on Visit Bongo. While his second and third albums featured pan-African escapades fuelled by a collaborative spirit, this fourth offering sees Konde Boy take ownership of the sounds gleaned from his musical travels. As a vibrant tapestry woven of Eastern, Western, and Southern African styles unfurls, trimmings of pop, R&B, Afrobeats, and amapiano coalesce with bongo flava and singeli. Rwanda’s Bruce Melodie and South Africa’s Nkosazana Daughter help season this sonic melting pot, carrying with them smooth refrains on the baecation-themed “Zanzibar” and falsetto reprises for a “Single Again” facelift. It’s over the praiseful crowd vocals of “Hallelujah,” infectious percussion of “Sijalewa,” and acoustic “Tena” that Harmonize’s adaptability is on full display though, with cascading horns, romantic guitar strums, and thumping log drums all guiding his melodic celebrations of love, life, and people.
