After releasing their well-received 2014 debut album, Cursing the Sea, this Dublin-based noise-pop quintet show their artistic growth with this four-song EP, Veneer. The title track signals a shift toward darker terrain, and “Black Oil” confirms it, with a glorious, electronic-laced trudge à la My Bloody Valentine and apocalypse-suggesting spoken-word vocals. “Melatonin” chases their psychedelic-garage side with a touch of Electric Prunes’ “I Had Too Much to Dream Last Night,” while “Butterflies” turns up the volume for a rhythmic crunch worthy of Joy Division’s “Dead Souls” and an ambitious melody that floats in and out of view.
