This techno producer’s debut LP is as functional as it is fascinating. He’s scaled back the grimier, funkier elements of his early EPs for a less cluttered approach, bringing the titles sleek sense of purpose to DJ tools like “Comments Off,” an industrial slab of mechanized snares, and “Balance” and “Loops 1, both squiggly drum workouts. While it’s all perfect for the dance floor, Kowton weaves in some headphone brain-melters too: Check out the deliciously deep bass and synth whooshes on “Scido,” and bask in the minimal-techno vibes of “Bubbling Under,” which plays like a lost Plastikman jam.
