Nicknamed “The Memphis Madonna” by vinyl hounds and underground dance DJs, Debra Dejean’s 1981 eponymous debut album was ahead of its time, though it still remains a cult recording. The album’s lead single “Goosebumps” opens with Dejean singing sultry inflections over tinges of disco, R&B and funk as (then) state-of-the-art synthesizers provided a glassy gloss, thanks in part to producers Bo Bohannon, Carl Marsh and a handful of Memphis session players. She covers The Zombies’ “Time of the Season” sounding a little like Frida (ABBA’s Anni-Frid Lyngstad) on her 1982 solo single “I Know There’s Something Going On.” The second semi-popular single “Are You Lovin’ Somebody” boasts a contagiously catchy keyboard lead and remains a favorite club jam. Dejean turns the Miracles’ “You’ve Really Got a Hold On Me” the kind of early ‘80s upgrade synonymous with legwarmers and Capezio dancewear.
