Threads is the impressive third full-length release from this high-energy, Vermont-based quintet. A skilled band of multi-instrumentalists, Barefoot Truth locks in some soulful grooves and covers a lot of stylistic ground here. Featuring a blend of acoustic and electric instruments, they have the musical chops and dexterity of a first-rate jam band coupled with compelling songwriting, topical, thoughtful lyrics, and solid hooks. Jay Driscoll’s distinctive phrasing on his Weissenborn lap slide guitar helps bring such songs as “From the Earth,” “Damage Done,” and “Roots of Stone” keenly alive while bluesy harmonica bends, upright and electric bass, and a wealth of fine piano and organ all compliment the warm, evocative voice of lead singer/drummer/guitarist Will Evans. Rounding out their sound is some well-placed marimba, assorted percussion, and didjeridoo, plus horns on “Without a Fight” and the title track, which smoothly shifts from smoky jazz to a funky, reggae-tinged vibe. Upbeat and irresistibly catchy, Threads is a creative leap forward for this young band on the rise.
