It's a testament to just how durable Mark E. Smith has made the band's approach that The Fall could lose its key guitarist, Craig Scanlon, and still be as convincing as ever. Even Smith himself hands off the vocals several times. Brix Smith and Karl Burns ensure the sound never lets up, while new keyboardist Julia Nagle colors the tunes as well, tipping the grooves of "The Coliseum" into a techno-styled mix. Gene Pitney's "Last Exit to Brooklyn (Last Chance To Turn Around)" sticks techno into a great old-school soul arrangement. Of course, having Smith around ensures that it all sounds like The Fall. "Cheetham Hill" includes co-producer Mike Bennett sharing the vocal spotlight with Smith to great effect. Burns takes a rare vocal turn for a straightforward cover of Johnny Paycheck's "Stay Away (Old White Train)." And Brix Smith shares vocals on the siren-fueled "Spinetrak." The album also adds two tracks—"The Chiselers" and "Chilinist"—that had been released on a single.
