These performances are drawn from the Berliner Philharmoniker’s 2017 Asian tour, their last under chief conductor Sir Simon Rattle. The program plays to all their strengths and gives a wonderful snapshot of the ensemble’s musical health. Their power and impact in Stravinsky (Petrushka) is profoundly impressive. Equally striking is their depth of sound in Brahms (Symphony No. 4), Rachmaninoff (Symphony No. 3), and Richard Strauss (Don Juan), while Unsuk Chin’s new Chorós Chordón is done supremely well.
