The debut from Australian crooner Matt Corby is a richly orchestrated throwback to the warm, whimsical grooves of the ‘70s, right down to the flute solos. Slinking through fluttering organs one minute (“Belly Side Up”), then quavering over smoky piano pop the next (“Wrong Man”), Corby’s voice is a honey-soaked baritone that’s unafraid to reach for both the high and low notes (dig his nearly subsonic coo on “We Could be Friends”). The music is equally ambitious, strutting between lush soul, sexy R&B, and spacey funk. Think Marvin Gaye by way of James Blake.
