In 1963, John Eliot Gardiner compiled the music for an Easter play created by his mother, Marabel, and performed annually in Dorset churches until 1984. Now with his magnificent Monteverdi Choir, he revives the play, and it can rarely have sounded better. Drawing on diverse music from five centuries, it tells the story of the Crucifixion, the Resurrection, and Christ’s reappearance to his disciples. Many familiar pieces slot into the narrative, yet the work’s originality and power are striking. This is a superb album, full of wonder.
