This first installment of the Minutemen’s Post-Mersh series collects the underground-punk icons’ first two albums, The Punch Line and What Makes a Man Start Fires?, illustrating how even when they were working in the hardcore-punk mold, they still packed more ideas into that framework than many of their ‘80s peers. “The Anchor” surges with complicated chords and a muscular bassline, while “The Struggle” fits maximum drama into its brisk 41 seconds and “The Punch Line” slams American imperialism.
