NCT 127 has gone through a fair amount of change since their debut as the newest configuration of SM Entertainment supergroup NCT in 2016. Then, the squad had six fresh-faced members; a decade on, with the release of BLINGY, the K-pop group is down to five (or seven, if you count Doyoung and Jungwoo, both serving in the military at the time of the album’s release), down from a peak membership of 10. But with the shifting dynamics comes a decade of idol experience that Taeyong, Johnny, Yuta, Jaehyun, and Haechan reflect on and use to reintroduce themselves with BLINGY. NCT 127 announces they’re back to party with the one-two punch of “Blingy” and “Piñata,” performance-driven tracks that combine hip-hop swagger and high-energy rock to “make the whole club shimmy.” The playful, beat-driven boasting (“You know we just doin’ us/The best and it’s obvious”) defines the nine-track album’s first half, but BLINGY transitions into something softer and smoother for its second half. NCT 127 champions a much-deserved vacation in late-summer house-pop track “Getaway” and gets emotional about their fans in “127 Million Miles” (featuring brief appearances by Doyoung and Joowon). “Blingy” may be the album’s lead single, but it’s “Legacy” that sums it all up. “A past that carved out a difficult road, I’ma go do the most/Planted the seeds, carved a chord above the Han River amid the chaos,” Haechan sings in the textured tribute to all that NCT 127 is.
