In 2012, Women guitarist Christopher Reimer died from complications due to a heart condition, leaving his former band members to fishtail before forming the post-punk project Viet Cong (later known as Preoccupations). Pairing the strut of mid-‘70s Bowie and Roxy Music with the chilly atmospheres of Joy Division, their debut EP is an inspired mix, from the synth-textured psychedelia of “Static Wall” to the shimmering “Unconscious Melody,” which starts with a croon and builds to a rough, foaming head.
