Contemporary Christian singer-songwriter Anne Wilson teased this sophomore album with 2023’s REBEL (The Beginning), a three-track EP previewing the follow-up to 2022’s My Jesus. That EP includes the title track, an unorthodox variation on the outlaw country genre that likens being a practicing Christian to an act of rebellion. Though not all of the sprawling 16-track record is quite in that spirit, REBEL does give Wilson room to play with genre, finding places—like on the soaring and inspirational “3:16” and the patriotic “God & Country”—where country and contemporary Christian music intersect. Wilson gets a co-sign from Lainey Wilson on “Praying Woman,” a soulful ballad about being a woman of faith, while Jordan Davis joins on the simple-living celebration “Country Gold.” Longtime contemporary Christian favorite Chris Tomlin rounds out the guest list, lending vocals to the worship anthem “The Cross.”
