Hope In My Hood Vol 1

Hope In My Hood Vol 1

Munna ikee proudly represents O’Block, a recognized appellation for the South Side apartment complex that brought us Chicago drill-rap greats Chief Keef and King Von. His unbreakable ties to that infamous locale, as well as its storied musical legacy, are more than apparent throughout Hope in My Hood Vol 1, a full-length debut that gives the streetwise melodic rapper a proper introduction. On singles like “3AM” and “Oh Brother,” he presents a defiantly cold point of view born of his upbringing and lived experiences, something that proliferates the further one gets through the full tracklist. Though there are considerable displays of toughness throughout, cuts like “Uh Ohh” and “Still Ticking” go deeper into his hardened psyche, granting listeners a closer inspection of the man behind these songs. Even seemingly lighter fare—“Anything,” “Wooh,” and the Hunxho collab “Pretty Girls”—comes with a looming specter of violence, showing that he remains alert even in what should be peaceful, pleasurable moments.
