Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s historical epic Padmaavat beat out controversy to get its delayed, but highly anticipated, release—and the music made it worth the wait. Bhansali, one of a handful of Bollywood filmmakers who composes his own soundtracks, lays out six lushly orchestrated compositions to enhance his period drama. Shreya Ghoshal’s graceful vocal on “Jhoommani Jhoommani Aade” and Divya Kumar’s playful voice on “Gaji Biji Gola Ayinadhi” soar over a musical landscape of sitar and tabla, and Vijay Prakash’s plaintive voice lends a lovelorn realism to “Vinthagaa Merise Aame”.
