Christian McBride is profoundly technically skilled, but the bassist has always privileged pleasure over chops, and this trio serves it up generously. He lets his young counterparts—pianist Christian Sands and drummer Ulysses Owens Jr.—shine within a variety of approaches. Gospel infuses a breakneck treatment of Oscar Peterson’s “Hallelujah Time,” where McBride’s fleet walking lines support a dazzling piano solo; elsewhere the trio gets both expansive (a Coltrane-esque take on “My Favorite Things”) and celebratory (a funky cover of the Stax hit “Who’s Making Love”).
