You kinda had to be there to make sense of the fact that the finest Balearic music of the mid- to late 2000s was coming out of sunny Gothenburg, Sweden, where a bumper crop of bands were making beachy electronic pop jams filtered through a vaguely Nordic lens. Among the standouts from that era was West Coast, the 2006 debut full-length from the duo of Dan Lissvik and Rasmus Hägg, whose occasionally epic tracks (in the case of songs like the nearly 16-minute intro “Out There”) gently folded in the sounds of cosmic disco, dub reggae, and West African guitar. Studio’s pop sensibilities countered all that dreamy meandering, making the record something of a classic among the message-board set; its 2025 reissue, which comes with a bonus disc of edits, brings its breezy vibes to streaming for the first time.
