After a two-year absence, Fireflight returns with newly recruited drummer Adam McMillion (ex-Search the City) supplying added rhythmic drive to the band's metal-tipped sonic attack. Justin Cox and Glenn Drennen flex considerable guitar muscle on aggressive upbeat rockers and arena-sized ballads alike. Lead singer Dawn Michele soars high above the tracks, exploring an emotional landscape scarred by fear, shame, and confusion. The hope of spiritual redemption is snatched from despair in blazing tunes like “Stay Close,” “Escape," and “Prove Me Wrong.” As on past releases, Fireflight proves masterful at delivering sanctified anthems with shout-along choruses. ("Ignite” and the title number are particularly galvanizing.) “Stronger Than You Think” lets Michele rip into a demonic oppressor with palpable fury, while “He Weeps” confronts questions of human suffering from a biblical perspective. “Rise Above” reveals a more restrained (but no less intense) side of the band.
