In the minimalist, electronic world of saxophonist Joseph Shabason's Aytche, pulse and timbre shift slowly, and compositions take shape over long, hovering arcs. The prevailing beauty and mystery come from Shabason turning his horn into “a densely chordal instrument” with effects. Samples and other textures creep in to complicate the ethereal haze. Shabason creates transitions, juxtapositions, and a more aggressive attack on “Smokestack,” “Chopping Wood,” and “Belching Smoke” that shakes up the album.
