Nebulous Nights - An Ambient Excursion into Profound Mysteries emerged as a surprise, dropped by Norwegian electronic icons Röyksopp in 2024 with nary a pre-release announcement. The concept revolves around the duo’s Profound Mysteries series, a three-part 2022 project that bridges music and other forms of media alongside collaborators like Alison Goldfrapp, Astrid S, and more. Longtime friends behind the project Svein Berge and Torbjørn Brundtland said goodbye to regular album releases with 2014’s The Inevitable End, and while Nebulous Nights is in no way a traditional release, it unfolds like their full-length experiences of yore. The ambient reinterpretations of the 2022 project were recorded live after all-day sessions for the Profound Mysteries series. Though the sounds that exist on Nebulous Nights are far calmer and more meditative than what appeared there, Röyksopp still invites the same group of collaborators. Alison Goldfrapp croons over warm piano melodies on “We Enter / State of Awareness,” and Astrid S brings hushed melodies to the deep house bass patterns of “Waiting Still.”
