In the wake of winning Tanzania’s most prominent music talent competition Bongo Star Search in 2025, newcomer Moses Luka, could have sung about anything. But the rising star doubled down on his brand of Afropop-adjacent gospel tunes with songs like “Move On” and “Jah,” assuredly blending influences from bongo flava to Bollywood-inspired scores into his own iridescent take on gospel. Cementing his position at the vanguard of a new generation of Tanzanian gospel singers, Moses Luka’s self-titled debut project is an unabashed testament of gratitude, taking stock of the changes in his life and surrendering to the divine. Across the six-track project, Luka leans into a stripped-down soul texture, working over a silky blend of dreamy piano chords and drowned-out percussion. On “Nawe,” he commits his path to the hands of his maker, confident of the infallibility of that companionship. “So, I pray that you lead me,” he solemnly sings on “Lead Me,” a collab with Melanie Anthony that stays faithful to the project’s mood. Luka’s declarations of commitment are delivered with a disarming softness, like on “Moja” with Joel Lwaga, where he refers to God as his number one priority.
