Deerhunter truly hit their stride with Microcastle, unifying their experimental tendencies with a knack for writing tight-knit hooks—and in the process crafting one of the great indie-rock records of the ‘00s. Opening with the one-two punch of “Cover Me Slowly” and “Agoraphobia,” Bradford Cox and company create a swirling sound that nods to shoegaze while remaining undeniably itself. The epic “Nothing Ever Happened” builds to a catharsis of dueling guitars, melding garage rock and art pop in one fell swoop.
