Salsa truly shines when it bridges both worlds: the instrument-first, danceable dura and the emotional, ballad-prone romantic. This Venezuelan quintet's sophomore LP doesn't shy away from fiery sounds—hot brass, hard bongos—capable of making staunch wallflowers groove. Even so, the lyrics are gut-wrenchingly raw, especially in the castanet-clacking tale of star-crossed lovers "Clase Social." And although the sultry rhythms and piercing vocals of "Persona Ideal" make it a fit for underground clubs and open-air concerts, the pained poetry speaks to a romance that can never be realized.
