By an accountant’s measure, 8Ball and MJG are second runners on the Memphis hip-hop scene; acclaimed, commercially successful and universally respected, but always a step behind Three 6 Mafia, who became the protagonists of one of hip-hop’s most unlikely success stories with their 2006 Oscar win. Yet 8Ball and MJG have been as important an influence on the development of hip-hop in Memphis as their more famous contemporaries, and while Three 6 Mafia’s output has slowed considerably since 2006, 8Ball and MJG have been maintaining a grueling release schedule. Less a proper solo record than a sampler of the Memphis scene, 8Ball’s Memphis Allstars sees the MC playing host to a distinguished roster of talented collaborators including established names like Gangsta Blak, Juicy J, and MJG, and up and coming artists like Devius, Big Ammo and Mac E.
