

On his third full-length, Johannesburg-born singer, MC, and songwriter Marcus Harvey’s reimagined vision of neo-soul is decidedly rooted in South African and American musical traditions while also having an eye toward the future. “Mmangwane” is a slick, spare quiet-storm track where Harvey, in Sepedi, uses his searing falsetto to detail his resolve; “Come to Me,” a collab with the Chicago MC Mick Jenkins, channels the loose vibes of Sly Stone and D'Angelo; and on “Who Is Elvis?” he unravels his complex feelings about his father through tongue-twisting verses in English and Sepedi.
