Money Over Love

Money Over Love

“Wetin money no fit buy?/Dem say money no fit buy love,” Yiizi and TMZY lament in the opening lines of the titular closing track of their joint debut EP, Money Over Love. In many ways, those lines sum up the project’s efforts at holding a mirror to the climate of youthful romance in which the two rising acts from Ebute Metta, Lagos find themselves. It presents the universal struggle of trying to find love and satisfy ambition and the need for material possessions. The eight-track Money Over Love is nearly 20 minutes of thoughtful, vulnerable, interrogative, and sometimes reflective tracks, full of unfiltered emotions. Switching between Yoruba and Pidgin with a bouncy sing-rap flow, Yiizi and TMZY take turns at offering spirited attempts at consolidating hope and resignation. Money Over Love opens with the soft, thumping “Ayawa” where the duo is aided by production drawing from sample drill, a style pioneered by American producer-rapper Cash Cobain which blends an R&B sample with a drill beat and melodic rap. Transitioning to “Mind,” TMZY is solo as he recounts his emotional state following past career drawbacks. On “Somadina,” Yiizi illustrates the effects of class and privilege on relationships. In all, Money Over Love is a constant push and pull between conflicting notions as both artists find themselves contending with the complexities of young adulthood.
