The T Sisters achieve an impeccable vocal blend here that’s applied to a batch of (mostly) self-written tunes brimming with folksy wisdom and youthful spirit. That siblings Erika, Rachel, and Chloe Tietjen sound like they were born to harmonize is no surprise. What might not be expected is that Kindred Lines boasts considerable songwriting chops, combining folk, blues, swing, and gospel elements in fresh ways. Produced by veteran bluegrass artist Laurie Lewis, the T Sisters go for an acoustic-based sound that gives their voices plenty of room to interweave and soar. They confidently breeze through upbeat tunes like “You Don’t Know” and “Train Wreck,” take on blues shadings for “Woo Woo” and “It Was Me,” and detour into ritzy cabaret stylings on “But Not for You.” The Sisters’ lyrics are heartfelt and well-observed, with “Seduction of Spring” and “Molasses” standing out for their nature-rooted imagery. A gorgeous a cappella reading of Paul Simon’s “American Tune” complements their originals. Guitarist Grant Gordy, bassist Todd Phillips, mandolinist Mike Marshall, and trumpeter Lech Wierzynski enhance this smart, well-realized song collection.
