Following the dissolution of Buffalo Springfield, Neil Young set out on his own with this quirky debut album that charts his evolution to come. A touch more psych rock than his later work, this LP sees Young trying many different styles, including long-winded folk sagas like “The Last Trip to Tulsa,” stomping rock chargers like “The Loner,” and melancholy ballads like “The Old Laughing Lady.” It’s the sound of an artist at the start of his journey, considering all the paths he might take.
