Young Buffalo songwriters Ben Yarbrough and Jim Barrett began writing music together as teenagers and formed Young Buffalo in 2009. So, while 2015’s House is the full-length debut by the Oxford, Miss.–based group, it’s been a long time coming. Expanding the ranks to a quintet gives them the lineup needed to bring color to these literate pop songs. Producer Dave Schiffman (Haim, Weezer) provides a spacious, dreamlike, summertime sound that lends a Beach Boys–styled yearning to “My Place” and its luminous harmonies. “Guilt” experiences moody tension, while “Black Eye” and “Summertime Blondes” carry an urgency that’s positive and infectious.
