Never Thought I Could (Part 1)

Lloyiso’s debut album leans into uplift yet does so without sacrificing spectacle. The singer, who had by time of this release long been recognized as one of South Africa’s most compelling vocalists, has a voice that moves effortlessly across registers—from smooth tenor runs to striking falsetto peaks—serenading audiences with a soulful, energetic, and motivational blend of pop and R&B. With Never Thought I Could, Lloyiso delivers both range and gratitude in droves. Look no further than “Rain” for a testament to the sheer power of his voice, while “Higher” opens with buzzing synths, choir harmonies, and thunderous drums. The latter boasts lively production that somehow frames his voice rather than overwhelms it. “High” pairs a vocal-chant hook with crisp EDM-leaning production, while the dance-floor-ready “Scary” balances propulsion with restraint, keeping Lloyiso’s vocal presence front and center. On “Fragile Things,” the singer’s humility shines through, Lloyiso belting, “I’m not so good with fragile things/They break me every time.” Across tracks like the skittering “Fade Away” and the bass-heavy “Lost & Found,” the production remains polished and expansive, but it’s never too much for Lloyiso, who were he less humble, could call this album’s follow-up I Came, I Saw, I Conquered.
