When Iglesias recorded his second English-language pop album, he couldn’t have had any idea of the cultural impact it would have: The quivering ballad “Hero” took on an inescapable resonance in post-9/11 America while the rest of Escape provided just that for a country in mourning. Slightly sidelining his Spanish roots, it provided a picture of musical unity, with Iglesias embracing Eurotrance on “Love to See You Cry” and Eurovision on the defiantly camp “I Will Survive,” with nods to hip-hop and classic rock elsewhere.
