Hello, Again

Indie rock thrives on its private language, its DIY humility, and, of course, a love for guitar sounds that howl, jangle, and bleed over solid, rocking drumbeats. Chicago-based Kittyhawk center their attack around singer/keyboardist Kate Grube, who twists her double-tracked harmonies as adventurously as old-school Ohio indie rockers Scrawl (“Welcome Home”) while guitarists Erik Czaja and Mark Jaeschke flesh out into power pop (“Hans Christian Andersen”). But the pop magic guiding the creatively titled “The Petravicz Estate,” “Sunny Day Renter’s Insurance," and the somber but chilling “Jude II” suggest a band capable of considerable commercial damage if inclined.
