James Johnston’s 2023 debut RAISED LIKE THAT saw him nominated for a stack of awards and propelled its title track to platinum sales. The Australian country singer builds on that success with WHERE YOU’LL FIND ME, which is even more direct and rock-centered than its predecessor. That’s thanks partly to producer Jared Adlam, who juggles various guitars and keyboard instruments and co-wrote several tunes—including “I OUGHTA KNOW BETTER,” a raucous, ’90s-style take on the requisite drinking song. Driven by Johnston’s big, yearning vocals, it’s all about how one harmless sip turns to many more, complete with cheeky references to Bridget Jones, “Stairway to Heaven,” and a colorful way of describing lovemaking. Johnston also collaborates twice with his mentor, Morgan Evans: “ONE MORE” is a rousing anthem about not wanting a night to end, while “BACK IN THE DAY” gazes tenderly back to a time that didn’t feel quite so hectic. And the Australian Idol and The X Factor alum duets with South African singer Appel on “COUNTRY IS FOR ME,” a song about how the titular genre can easily traverse cultures and continents alike.
