Lil Peep had announced the title of his GOTH ANGEL SINNER EP in October 2017, just weeks before his accidental fatal overdose, claiming it was “coming soon.” Two years later, the short, bittersweet trio of tracks feels like a glimpse into the rapper’s psyche in his final days: starkly honest grunge-rap dirges for feeling everything and nothing at the same time. On “Belgium,” Nirvana-inspired riffs weave between trap drums for a bleak but tender ode to tainted love; “When I Lie,” a strangely beautiful bit of nu-metal revivalism, drops simple but heart-wrenching lines like “I’m not evil by design, but I feel dead at times.” It’s not a happy listen, but it’s a snapshot of a talent gone far too soon.
