Now a handful of albums into his career, Australian country artist Andrew Swift graciously takes stock on Lucky Stars. There are songs about friendship, parenthood, home, and the scrapes that have shaped him. “The sticks, the stones, the broken bones/That made me who I am,” Swift sings on the empowering opener “Nothing Better,” inspired by a bout of homesickness while he was working in Nashville. There’s a real rock edge to the track, but he dabbles equally in pop on lighter tracks such as “Neon Queen” and “(Hot Damn) It’s Been a Minute.” Working with ARIA-winning producer Matt Fell, Swift also taps an elite cast of collaborators that includes Nashville guitarist Jeff King (“Get Lost”) and co-writers Blake Dantier and Craig Taylor (“See You at the Bottom”)—the latter pair working with him across three time zones. But the most striking teamup is with his partner, Simone Sordello, who makes her musical debut with a full-hearted duet about their new daughter. Co-written with Phil Barton, “Oh Valentine” captures the entwined hope and worry of envisioning what lies ahead for a newborn baby. On an album that’s ripe with anthems, it’s sweet to hear the happy couple sing each other’s praises—literally—in such a vulnerable setting.
