Works, Vol. 1

Works Volume 1 is split evenly among the three voices of ELP. While Keith Emerson explores orchestral composition, Carl Palmer revives pure rock ‘n’ roll, especially the greasy blues tune “New Orleans.” Between the soothing ballad “Closer To Believing” and the rootsy R&B of “Nobody Loves You Like a Do,” Greg Lake’s offerings are the strongest songs, but collectively, the trio roars to life on “Fanfare For the Common,” an Aaron Copland adaptation in which Emerson’s keyboards whistle and whizz alongside the ripping groove.
