The Rhode Island band mines local lore on their self-produced ninth album. Following their prior work with psychedelic production whiz Dave Fridmann, Deer Tick’s ninth album finds the raucous Providence-hailing rock band taking control of the boards for the first time in their career. The result is a collection of songs that recall the timeless heartland rock of Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers as well as The Band’s Southern-rock ramble. Coin-O-Matic is a personal record for Deer Tick in another aspect as well, as the songs zoom in on the shady spots and dark dives of Rhode Island’s history. “ACI” directly nods to the Adult Correctional Institutions prison just outside Providence, while elegiac six-minute closer “Candy Cigarettes” is a partial gesture to the city’s monument honoring those who passed in Northern Ireland’s 1981 H-Block Hunger Strike.
