On Police & Thieves, Junior Murvin’s falsetto is as arresting and celestial as his hero Curtis Mayfield’s, but the resemblance doesn’t end there. Like Mayfield, the singer takes an unstinting look at his country’s fraught socio-political landscape. On the title track (famously covered by The Clash), Murvin prods the police state with a velvet glove—and gets away with it. Lee Perry’s musical backdrop is a modern-art masterpiece in its own right, using hallucinatory effects to render familiar instruments nearly unrecognizable.
