De-Plumed

De-Plumed

De-Plumed is less a “best-of” collection than an artistic summary of the Choir’s musical journey over the past 25 years. Founding members Derri Daughtery and Steve Hindalong selected one track from each of their albums, then re-recorded them in sparse acoustic form, dispensing from the atmospheric guitar effects that have often defined their work. Heard in this pristine form, the tunes can be more fully appreciated as deeply spiritual and compassionate meditations upon God, love, friendship and loss, told with insight and a touch of humor. Daughtery’s high tenor remains one of the most distinctive voices in Christian rock — he is in especially strong form on the bittersweet “Hey Gene” and the tender “A Sentimental Song.” “Clouds” captures the Choir at their most mystically reverent, while “Enough To Love” ranks among the most poetically graceful praise numbers in recent memory. Sixpence None the Richer’s Matt Slocum adds caressing cello textures at key moments.
