Gary Wright is best known for his ‘70s hit single, “Dream Weaver,” but the man has been recording music with his famous friends for years. Wright played most of the instruments on this new album, but he is joined by Joe Walsh and Jeff “Skunk” Baxter on guitars, and Ringo Starr on drums, for the opening cut “Satisfied.” It’s a tight, sleek collection of R&B-flavored pop. There’s no arguing with the flawless playing on the keyboard-guitar crunch of “Get Your Hands Up,” where back-up singers Valerie Pinkston and Lisa Vaughn co-star and push the song into a soul groove that wouldn’t be out of place back in the ‘80s. “Under Your Spell” furthers Wright’s intentions to remind you that he was once the soft-rock superstar of “Dream Weaver,” with a keyboard and ethereal light that can send you back to a shag carpet or the backseat of Ford Pinto. “No One Does It Better,” Can’t Find No Mercy” and “Gimme Some Time” balance between Rod Stewart’s sweaty vocals and the blue-eyed soul of Steve Winwood.
