Within Ghana’s burgeoning R&B scene, singer-songwriter Darkua is shaping a world where unfiltered emotions run free. With Never Too Late, she echoes the all too familiar tropes of love and self-discovery, while imbuing the crucial flavors that have inspired her evolution since 2020 debut single “E Dey Pain.” Within the vibrant, colorful world of Never Too Late, she aims to show, not just tell, the nitty-gritty of her current headspace across six tracks. Warm opener “Love Is a Beautiful Thing” finds her grappling with uncertainty, wistfully singing, “Love is a beautiful thing/But sometimes it hurts/Sometimes it feels wrong/Sometimes I don’t know,” and, like the swinging tides of its lyrics, its production melds soft strings with harsh brass notes to drive home the conflicting feelings of early romance. The C-Tea-produced “On My Way” comes across as equal parts a prayer and a document of the artist’s longing, utilizing choirs and carefully crafted melodies to punctuate the hopefulness of her thoughts. “Tori” ventures into rhythmic, pop-leaning waters with a slick bounce as Darkua muses, “When I needed you the most you disappeared/Starting to feel like you do not care.” Things take a turn for the darker towards the end of the project on tracks such as “MiiYa.” Here, Darkua’s vocals serve as the lead instrument on the stripped-back Insvne Auggie production. Translating from Ga to mean “I’m leaving,” “MiiYa” emphasizes the strength in exiting abusive situations, as it is Never Too Late.
