There’s a cinematic quality to almost everything by Farhan Khan, the Urdu rapper-singer who has chosen to take on a different persona for each major project. His 2024 singles “Rudali” and “Jannat” brought an end to Khansaab—the titular character of his 2021 debut album—to make way for Alif, a lovelorn poet who laments the loss of his Laila across a two-part LP. On Alif Laila (Part 2), the first to be released, Khan expresses his anger, denial and acceptance over six dramatically rendered tracks and three skits, the last of these a prelude to Alif Laila (Part 1) on which he will recall the couple’s happier days. In other words, the MC flips the script.
