Born2Run

Born2Run

Recorded in 2008 and originally issued on cassette Born2Run was re-released the same month as Mare, Julian Lynch’s 2010 work that earned the artist real notice. Born2Run is surprisingly satisfying, considering the depth and beauty of Mare; this is not a bunch of “b-sides” or inchoate experiments, but rather a richly colored collection of early works by the artist. Opening track “Banana Jam, Pt. 1” tells the listener all they need to know: Lynch understands melody and stickiness, just as much as he understands the endless textures and drama a lo-fi “bedroom” artist can surround him or herself with. The lulling, escapist “Banana Jam” — an elixir both adventurous and soothingly familiar — is perfectly contained and captured in its four minutes. At the other end, “Droplet On a Hot Stone” feels like a long-lost Syd Barrett basement tape, hinting at pop potential while exhibiting its inarguable otherness. Lynch’s formal education in ethnomusicology clearly plays a role in his earthy, multi-textured music that is so difficult to categorize with a handy, well-worn label.
