They say that you should never let a crisis go to waste; just ask BabyTron. In 2023, the rascally Detroit rapper dropped his Out on Bond EP a few weeks after his arrest for drug possession, affixing a Mario mustache to his mugshot for the cover art. (The opening bar: “They caught me out in Nebraska with a controlled substance.”) They also say that history doesn’t repeat itself, but it rhymes. “They caught me down in ATL with a controlled substance,” BabyTron declares in the opener of Out on Bond Again. Nonetheless, the ShittyBoyz leader proceeds to spend his first day out eating steak and cheesecake and doing 180 on the freeway, slipping in a requisite obscure NBA reference (this time, retired Serbian hooper Peja Stojaković). Besides the usual fare from the Midwest’s prince of punchlines, the 17-track project offers cameos from fellow Michigander Rio Da Yung Og and Indiana’s Jorjiana, plus the unusually existential “IDK?”, on which Tron ponders the many ways one might meet their end.
