This 2015 collection includes The Soul Stirrers’ complete recorded output from September 1959 to July 1964, including the albums Jesus Be a Fence Around Me and Encore!!! With the Soul Stirrers, plus non-LP singles and four previously unreleased tracks. The Soul Stirrers were founded in 1926 by Roy Crain and added in 1951 a then-unknown Sam Cooke, whose SAR Records (founded with Crain and manager/songwriting partner J.W. Alexander) made releasing the Johnnie Taylor–era Soul Stirrers (with several tracks where Jimmie Outler takes the lead vocal) their priority. With their incomparable harmony vocals, The Soul Stirrers brought gospel music to the masses.
