The Chauncey Hollis Project II

The Chauncey Hollis Project II

Hit-Boy’s moniker as a producer/rapper is telling: He’s reigned the charts with beats he’s made for Kanye West, JAŸ-Z, Beyoncé, Drake, and more. But when it comes to the second installment of this series titled after his real name, he’s notably less focused on filling dance floors and radio waves and more about sharing what he has to say. That means fewer catchy hooks and more introspective rhymes. “POLITICKIN’” reflects on his success and refuses to rest on his laurels; “CANNONBALL” shares childhood memories as traumatic as loved ones lost to murder and as fond as diving into a pool or piling into an Altima with friends to go play basketball. That’s no slight to the production here, though. “ON A STREAK” chops and flips an R&B classic for his matter-of-fact boasts, “OVERDID IT” begins with melodic piano keys before transitioning into a more layered composition with guitars and vocals by Stacy Barthe, and “DON’T LET THEM STRESS YOU” is the perfect batch of carefree Cali vibes that match its featured artist DOM KENNEDY.
