In the decade since their initial joint mixtape, Tapped In, both Trae tha Truth and Mozzy have continued to build their respective legacies. Trae maintained his consistency as one of Houston’s most reliable street spitters, became vice president of T.I.’s Grand Hustle Records, and maintained a reputation as an on-the-ground advocate for imperiled Black people around the country; Mozzy went from a promising rapper from Sacramento to being one of the brightest stars from the city, dropping a string of well-received solo and collaborative records. The sequel, Still Tapped In, continues to showcase the duo at their best, Trae delivering his signature baritone and Mozzy with his own distinctively hoarse voice—both using their skills to convey a sobering, understated depiction of the street life from their hometowns that so many others glorify. Our Favorite Track: The penultimate “Let Ya Tears Fall” is one for highlights. Mozzy seeks forgiveness for his transgressions on the block and mourns the loss of his grandmother to cancer, while Trae eulogizes fallen comrades before recalling his months-long search for his six-year-old daughter whose disappearance launched a nationwide search by authorities. Trae and Mozzy specialize in real rap that gets personal, and this is exactly the type that makes their music last.
