On paper, this record reads like the setup to a joke: what happens when an Australian punk band walks into Mexican restaurant in Los Angeles? Why, they cut a country album, of course. That’s exactly what happened when Amyl and The Sniffers played an intimate gig at El Coyote in 2025, captured by filmmaker (and frequent collaborator) John Angus Stewart for a concert film. But Truth or Consequence isn’t the jarring departure that one might expect. Rather, it’s a stripped-down version of the band that forces their famously energetic frontwoman, Amy Taylor, to remain seated and wield her scratchy voice in a much mellower setting. The quartet’s fiery songbook adapts surprisingly well to the cadence of classic country, especially the accelerated opening version of “Big Dreams” and the 2018 track “Caltex Cowgirl,” which hinted at the band’s fondness for the genre even then. Guitarist Declan Mehrtens still gets in plenty of satisfying solos across this rowdy set, and bassist Gus Romer and drummer Bryce Wilson settle naturally into a breezier gait. Their punk spirit definitely shines through, though, whether the band are swapping out the setting of 2024’s “Me and the Girls” from an airport bar to a pig farm or capturing the desolation of late-night touring on a cover of the trucking song “Lights on the Hill.” And the new track “Bag of Cocaine” sits neatly in between country’s cautionary story-songs and Taylor’s own raw, irreverent energy.
