Everything, Briefly

Everything, Briefly

Daniel O’Donnell, the DJ and producer fitting out the initials D.O.D, spent years putting in work under the early mentorship of Laidback Luke, remixing tracks for artists including Lil Wayne and Justin Timberlake before his definitive breakout moment in 2024 with the Sonny Fodera and Jazzy collaboration “Somedays.” On his debut album Everything, Briefly, O’Donnell holds on to the moments in life that pass by all too quickly, printing the impression of them into spongey, house-music beats. The album’s core concept is captured most keenly in the details. “Promise You” draws out the toes-hanging-over-the-edge-of-a-cliff tension of offering your heart to another with anxiously paced synth stabs, while the titular refrain in breakup anthem “I’ll Be There” floats up out of the depths of the track, like an echo from the past. Elsewhere, venbee alternates her vocal between low and steady verses and an airy sweetness for the chorus of rhythmic heater “Want You to Want” and Armand Van Helden features on “Twice as Nice,” assisting on a breakneck build into explosive piano house. The record ends with the unbridled euphoria of “Be Free,” closing out on the kind of high note a Belinda Carlisle vocal sample guarantees.
