On UNBREAKABLE : 少年BEAST, ALPHA DRIVE ONE isn’t just a K-pop boy group, they’re self-described “beast boys” (“少年” roughly translates to “teen boy”). The eight-member squad was formed out of 160 initial contestants on idol survival show Boys II Planet, giving the theme of their second mini album some teeth. British-rave-inspired lead single “BORN DIRE” leans into the inherent brutality of that public formation, evoking a sense of urgency with its title and sound. Members Junseo, Arno, Leo, Geonwoo, Sangwon, Xinlong, Anxin, and Sanghyeon race through an electronic breakbeat minefield as they rap about charging forward boldly, in “beast mode.” The mood gets less dire as the members settle into UNBREAKABLE : 少年BEAST. “Diamond Hour,” an R&B track about how love can make time feel luxurious, begins with a sweet, retro sample of Jeon Yu-na’s love ballad “사랑이라는 건.”
